Yakan Village
Description
Yakan Village is a place where the Yakan people, an indigenous group from Basilan, live and showcase their art of weaving. They fled from their original homeland due to the political unrest and armed conflicts that started in the 1970s.
• Yakan Village is located in Upper Calarian, Zamboanga City. It is about 7 kilometers away from the commercial district of Zamboanga. Visitors can get there by taxi, jeepney, or van.
• Yakan Village has a merchandising area where visitors can buy various handwoven products made by the Yakans, such as fabrics, apparel, accessories, souvenirs, and antiques. The products are famous for their bold colors and intricate geometric patterns.
• Yakan Village also has a weaving station where visitors can watch the Yakans at work and learn about their traditional weaving techniques. The Yakans use fibers from pineapple and abaca plants as their basic material for weaving. They also use natural and chemical dyes to create different designs and motifs.
