Sanga-Sanga Airport
Description
Sanga-Sanga Airport is an airport that serves as the gateway to Tawi-Tawi, the southernmost province of the Philippines. It is located in the municipality of Bongao, about 10 kilometers from Panglima Sugala, the capital of Tawi-Tawi. The airport has a single runway that can accommodate small to medium-sized aircrafts. The airport also has a terminal building that can handle up to 100 passengers per hour.
The airport is also a tourist attraction in itself, as it offers a stunning view of the Celebes Sea and the surrounding islands. The airport is situated on a hilltop that overlooks the Sibutu Passage, a strait that separates the Philippines and Malaysia. The airport also has a cultural village that showcases the traditional houses and crafts of the Sama people, one of the indigenous groups in Tawi-Tawi.
The airport was built in 1974 by the Philippine government to facilitate the development and security of Tawi-Tawi. The airport was named after Sanga-Sanga, one of the 307 islands that make up the Tawi-Tawi archipelago. The airport was renovated and expanded in 2017 to accommodate more flights and passengers.
