Description

Pinacanauan River is one of the rivers in the Philippines, and is a tributary of the Cagayan River, the longest, widest and most powerful river in the country. The river passes through the Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape, which has large karst formations, underground chambers, and rare wild flora. The river is considered one of the most picturesque attractions in Cagayan, and is a popular place for rafting, kayaking, boating, and swimming.

The river has a historical significance as well. It was once a trading post for the Japanese, who were allied with the native Ibanag people in the 16th century. It was also the site of the 1582 Cagayan battles, which were fought between Spanish soldiers and Japanese ronin (masterless samurai).

The river has a name that comes from the local term pinacanauan, which means “left-most”. It is found in the southeast of Cagayan Province in the municipality of Peñablanca in Cagayan Valley.

The river has a length of 82.6 km (51.3 mi) and a basin size of 65,099 hectares (650.99 km 2). It drains the agricultural plains of Cagayan Valley and serves as a water source for irrigation and other purposes.

The river features a golden aramang fountain, which is a symbol of the town's rich fishing industry. Aramang is a local term for salted fish, which is one of the main products of Aparri. Every year on April 21, a boat rowing race known as Bankarera takes place on the river.
