Mount Ugo
Description
Mount Ugo is a mountain in the Philippines that is located in the border of Nueva Vizcaya and Benguet provinces. It has an elevation of 2,150 meters above sea level or 7,054 feet.
Mount Ugo is a popular hiking destination that offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains of the Cordillera region, pine forests, villages, and highland rice paddies. It has a trail that traverses from Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya to Itogon, Benguet, or vice versa. The trail is moderately challenging and takes 2 to 3 days to complete.
Mount Ugo has a rich history and culture, as it was once a trading post for the Japanese, who were allied with the native Ibanag people in the 16th century. It was also the site of the 1582 Cagayan battles, which were fought between Spanish soldiers and Japanese ronin (masterless samurai). The name "Ugo" was derived from the Ibaloi word "Ugoan" which means "to cut the neck".
Mount Ugo was also the site of a tragic plane crash in 1987, when a Philippine Airlines flight bound for Baguio crashed into one of its slopes, killing all 50 people on board. The rescue operations led to the discovery of the mountain as an ideal place for hiking.
