Iguig Calvary Hills
Description
Iguig Calvary Hills is a religious and historical attraction in Iguig, Cagayan Province, in the Cagayan Valley region of the Philippines. It is a 11-hectare land that features 14 life-size concrete stations of the cross that depict the passion and death of Jesus Christ. It is one of the most visited tourist spots in Cagayan Province, especially during the Holy Week, when thousands of pilgrims and devotees flock to the hills to pray and reflect.
The stations of the cross were built in 1982 by the parish priest of Iguig, Fr. Jerry Orbos, with the help of local artists and volunteers. The stations are arranged along a winding path that leads to a hilltop where a chapel and a giant cross are located. The stations are made of concrete and painted with earth tones to blend with the natural surroundings. The stations also have inscriptions in English and Ilocano, the native language of Cagayan Valley.
The hills also offer a panoramic view of the Cagayan River, the longest and largest river in the Philippines, and the surrounding rice fields and mountains. You can also see the view of the Sierra Madre mountain range, which is the longest mountain range in the Philippines. The hills are also a venue for some cultural and religious events, such as concerts, masses, and processions.
The hills are easily accessible by car or by tricycle from Tuguegarao City, the capital city of Cagayan Province. It is about 16 kilometers away from the city and takes about 30 minutes to reach. The entrance fee to the hills is P10 per person. You can also hire a guide for P100 per group.
The best time to visit Iguig Calvary Hills is during the summer season, from March to May, when there is less rainfall and more sunshine. However, you should also be prepared for the hot and humid weather, as Cagayan Valley is one of the warmest regions in the country. You should also bring some food and water, as there are no restaurants or stores on the hills.
Iguig Calvary Hills is not only a place to pray and worship, but also a place to appreciate the history and culture of Cagayan Province.
