Diura Fishing Village
Description
Diura Fishing Village is a small and traditional fishing village in Mahatao, Batanes, the northernmost province of the Philippines. It is located near the Rakuh-a-idi Spring, also known as the Fountain of Youth. It is one of the oldest and most authentic villages in Batanes, where you can experience the simple and harmonious way of life of the Ivatans, the indigenous people of Batanes.
The village is famous for its annual fishing ritual called kapayvanuvanua, which means "giving thanks for the abundance of fish" in Ivatan, the native language of Batanes. The ritual is held every March or April, when the fishing season starts. The ritual involves offering prayers and sacrifices to the gods of the sea and the sky, and sharing the first catch of the season among the villagers.
The village is also a popular spot for sightseeing and photography, as it offers a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby Mt. Iraya, a dormant volcano. You can also see the traditional stone houses with thatched roofs, the colorful fishing boats, and the drying fish on the shore. You can also interact with the friendly and hospitable villagers, who will welcome you with smiles and stories.
To get to Diura Fishing Village, you need to fly from Manila to Basco, the capital town of Batanes. From there, you need to take a tricycle or a private van to Mahatao, where you can hike for about 30 minutes to reach the village. You can also join a tour that will take you around Batan Island and make a stop at Diura Fishing Village. The best time to visit Diura Fishing Village is during the summer season, from March to May, when there is less rainfall and more sunshine.
Diura Fishing Village is not only a place to enjoy nature and culture, but also a place to appreciate the history and heritage of Batanes. It showcases the rich culture and resilient spirit of the Ivatans, who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.
