Capisaan Cave

Capisaan Cave is one of the most extensive yet navigable cave systems in the Philippines. It is located in Barangay Capisaan, Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, and has a length of about 4.2 kilometers. It has nine known entrances, with the three main ones called Lion, Alayan, and Sabrina. The cave features large halls and chambers, a subterranean river, and different formations such as stalagmites, stalactites, soda straws, and helictites. It is also a habitat for various wildlife, such as bats, fishes, and crabs.

Capisaan Cave is a popular destination for spelunkers and adventurers who want to explore the beauty and mystery of the cave. There are two routes that visitors can take: a short route that takes 2-3 hours and a long route that takes 5-6 hours depending on the pace. The short route starts from Sang-at Salug (which is the half-way point) and exits at either Lion or Alayan. The long route is the usual tourist option and starts from Lion all the way to Alayan (or vice versa).

Capisaan Cave is also rich in history and culture, as it was once a trading post for the Japanese, who were allied with the native Ibanag people in the 16th century. It was also the site of the 1582 Cagayan battles, which were fought between Spanish soldiers and Japanese ronin (masterless samurai).
