Candon Church

Candon Church is a historical and religious attraction in Candon, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. It is also known as the Saint John of Sahagun Parish Church, and it is dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Here are some facts about Candon Church that you might find interesting:

• The church was founded in 1591 by the Augustinians, who accepted Candon as a house. The church was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1707, but it was rebuilt from 1790 to 1800 in an Earthquake Baroque style that combines European and Asian elements.

• The church has a distinctive facade that features a single belfry, three arched entrances, and a triangular pediment with a bas-relief of Saint John's conversion. The interior has a cruciform layout with a central nave and four lateral chapels. The main altar has an image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the patroness of the archdiocese.

• One of the highlights of the church are the two paintings on canvas almost 150 feet long, representing the 20 Mysteries of the Holy Rosary. It is said to be the longest religious painting in the Philippines. The paintings were created by Father Vincente Avila, his cousin Mel Andino, and Andino's student Redentor Castillo, and were unveiled in December 2007.

• The church is open daily from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm for visitors and worshippers. It offers regular masses in English, Filipino, and Ilocano languages. It also serves as a venue for weddings, baptisms, confirmations, and other sacraments.
